FURNITURE AND CARS LOST IN GARAGE FIRE
Traffic Held Up While Firemen Work
Extensive damage was caused by a fire which broke out at Bould's (Motors), Ltd., showrooms and garage in Clarence-place, Newport, at mid-day on Wednesday.
Within a few minutes the Newport Fire Brigade, under Chief Officer C. E. Smith, Second Officer A. W. Roberts, and Superintendent G. H. Scott, arrived and played the hoses on the burning building both from the front and the rear.
To enable them to have free scope for their activities traffic in and out of town was diverted via St. Vincent Road, and it was found necessary to hold up dozens of tramcars.
Despite the unceasing stream of water from four hoses the flames continued to gain firm hold and in a short time the roof caved in.
At one time flames threatened to spread to neighbouring buildings, but the firemen succeeded in confining the flames to the garage and showrooms.
